Although it was originally developed in Japan in 1950s and today, globally most of the modal is produces by Austrian company. Modal fabric is a bio-based fabric that is made from spinning beach tree cellulose into fibres which is completely biodegradable, so it technically is a sustainable textile. Modal is only made from the wood pulp of renewable beech tree and is generally considered an eco-friendlier alternative to cotton because beech trees don’t require much water to grow and therefore the production process uses about 10-20 times less water.
