A very fine and rare Japanese brass percussion pistol. Circa 1840-1850.  The side-plate and barrel are engraved to one side with floral decoration and overlaid with a bronze Japanese Mon. The octagonal 4.5 inch brass barrel finishing with a tulip shaped muzzle.  A swivel ramrod was probably fitted under the barrel originally, now missing. The fine wooden grips are covered with Traditional Japanese lacquered work showing gold painted trellis work and 3 gold Mons. The brass trigger guard also engraved with matching leaves, etc. A fine example of a very rare Japanese percussion pistol. Calibre approx .38. Overall length 8 inches. Action in working order.
